Here’s the story behind the original record for thems that’s interested according to Tirk. Big Larry levan record, who is one of my DJ heroes.:

“The story behind the Joubert Singers’ ‘Stand on the Word’ goes back to early eighties New York, but has become topical again with the controversy surrounding the Keedz cover version that’s blowing up at the moment ( is it Justice in disguise / is it rubbish / have Universal France deliberately made sure everyone thinks it’s Justice etc etc). You can read more about the story behind it on the blog ( explodingart.blogspot.com ), but to cut a long story short : 1980 –ish,Walter Gibbons parties too much, finds god and a job behind the counter of 7th Avenue Rock and Soul, starts playing customers his favourite gospel tunes, including local choir the Joubert Singers ‘Stand on the Word’, which in turn becomes a Zanzibar / Loft and Garage favourite. Enter Larry Levan stage left with a Paradise Garage destroying remix /edit, and an enduring underground classic is born.”

The linked track recently appeared on the Mark E RA podcast and is one of my favourites of theirs. It’s a re work of Heavy Love Affair from the Marvin Gaye LP In Our lifetime, one of his lesser known albums. It (the LP) was released after the commercial flop Here My Dear (one of my favourite Marvin LPs for its raw emotion) and has an interesting story, explained in more detail on the wiki entry below, which saw Motown reediting the record without Marvin’s knowledge before a rushed release, this would lead to Marvin leaving Motown.

I’ve had the Totally Flossed Out EP for a few months (the band are one of those myspace/internet groups whose music has been circulating the net for what feels like an age) and always end up playing the same tune when I’m playing out, so I’ll post that one as a taster of the EP for those of you who are yet to hear it:

The Cool Kids – What It Iz

The three piece is firmly rooted in golden era hip hop (one track is a nostalgic call to ’88 ) using playful metaphors and talking about their BMXes instead of champagne, cars and grills. There’s a kind of symmetry with Grime in the sparse nature of the beats they programme for me, anyway there’s a much longer review by proper music journos over at pitchfork that you can find via the link below.

Give the Bake Sale a try, it’s a different take on hip hop, fresh and promising despite having one foot firmly in a bygone time, hopefully they’ll bring some new material out soon.

It’s certainly a very interesting read that I would urge you to digest and consider so that you can make up your own mind about what he says. It might spur you on to read a few of his other interviews too; they’re never anything less than thought provoking.
